IoT Sensors to prevent wildfires in Sardinia

Prevent widlfires by using Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to detect forest fires early. This is the purpose of the collaboration between MEDSEA and Vodafone International, within the Legacy program of Extreme E, underway in the forest of San Leonardo, in the Oristano area. In particular, the activity with Vodafone would complete the ongoing reforestation project of Hope for Sennariolo.

In recent months, low-power, long-life sensors capable of promptly detecting any sign of fire or smoke and sending a warning directly to local authorities have been delivered to the MEDSEA Foundation.

The measurement and calibration of the equipment will be carried out in the coming months in order to be able to start the various tests and make the equipment operational as soon as possible. The sensors will be placed in trees to collect data and detect the stage of smouldering, providing relevant information to the appropriate services, including local firefighters and farmers, to inform them before the fire sets in, helping to preserve the footprint of the forest.

The low-cost IoT sensors are also able to operate without the need for mobile coverage, offering always-on connectivity.

The project was recently presented by Vodafone International at #MCC23, the world's largest and most influential mobile technology/connectivity event, hosted by GSMA in Barcelona, Spain.
