22 Events in Sardinia for World Wetlands Day

Wetlands such as ponds, lagoons, lakes, rivers, and peatlands form an endless world of aquatic ecosystems. In Sardinia, the call to explore these habitats is open this February with the Sardinian edition of World Wetlands Day.

In Sardinia, the World Wetlands Day celebrations extend over a month—from January 27 to February 28, 2025—with 24 events, including walks, workshops, excursions, contests, and cleanup activities. These events highlight the region’s nine internationally recognized RAMSAR wetlands, covering over 13,000 hectares of land that play a critical role in maintaining the Mediterranean ecosystem balance.

Join the events, participate, and share your experiences with the hashtags #WWDSardegna, #WorldWetlandsDay, #ForWetlands. The MEDSEA Foundation looks forward to hearing your stories and amplifying your impressions of this special day.

WHAT IS WORLD WETLANDS DAY?

Image

Foto Nieddittas / Lipu

Celebrated annually on February 2, World Wetlands Day raises awareness about the importance of wetlands for the planet and humanity. It marks the anniversary of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, signed in Ramsar, Iran, in 1971.

The theme for 2025, "Protecting wetlands for our common future", emphasizes the urgency of preserving these ecosystems, which are critical for climate change mitigation, CO2 storage, and flood water absorption. Sardinia, with its 9 RAMSAR sites covering 17% of Italy’s wetland area, stands out as a leader in wetland conservation efforts.

Over 64% of the world’s wetlands have been degraded or lost in the past century. World Wetlands Day is a call to action for their protection, underscoring their environmental, economic, and cultural importance.
