World Wetlands Day is celebrated every year on February 2, marking the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands signed on February 2, 1971, in Ramsar, on the shores of the Caspian Sea. This year, the chosen theme is “Protect wetlands for our common future”, a global call to protect these vital ecosystems for our shared future and the planet's well-being.
Once again, the MEDSEA Foundation is preparing to celebrate February as the month dedicated to ponds and lagoons in Sardinia. World Wetlands Day is an opportunity to raise awareness about the ecological and cultural significance of these unique environments. Wetlands, true treasures of biodiversity, play a crucial role in mitigating the effects of climate change by serving as green lungs, natural filters, and habitats for a multitude of species.
Events and Initiatives in Sardinia
In 2024, MEDSEA coordinated over 40 events across Sardinia, involving associations, businesses, and local administrations. This year, we are renewing our invitation to explore, experience, and promote the ponds and lagoons of our island!
We encourage organizations, associations, and businesses to propose events, activities, and thematic initiatives throughout February (from Jan. 25 to March 10th 2025). All contributions will be included in a shared calendar and promoted via our press, social media, and web channels.

It’s Time to Restore Wetlands
In the last 50 years, 35% of global wetlands have been lost, often misunderstood as useless or harmful environments. Today, we know they are irreplaceable resources for climate regulation, biodiversity, and the livelihoods of over a billion people.
In Sardinia, wetlands represent an extraordinary heritage: with 9 RAMSAR areas out of 57 in Italy, they account for 17% of the national surface, including the most recent site at the mouth of the Rio Posada. These areas not only provide shelter to numerous species but are also essential for environmental resilience and human well-being.
Join Us for World Wetlands Day 2025!
Help raise awareness of the value of wetlands and participate in events that will bring Sardinia to life throughout February. Only by working together can we protect and restore these precious environments for our shared future.
