In Sardinia, February is the month of wetlands! We celebrate World Wetlands Day on the occasion of February 2nd, which marks the 53rd anniversary of the establishment of the RAMSAR Convention for internationally important wetlands; when their ecological and environmental value was recognized for the first time. This year's World Wetlands Day is dedicated to the relationship between wetlands and people, a vital interconnection!
This February, environmental education events, tours and excursions by kayak or on foot, gastronomic events are organised so that the lagoons and ponds of Sardinia can be experienced and discovered with new eyes, and their richness can be disseminated for future generations.

Why a calendar of wetlands in Sardinia?
Sardinia stands out for its wealth of wetlands, having 9 RAMSAR areas of international importance out of 57 in Italy, covering 17% of the national total surface. This significant presence of wetlands in Sardinia is reflected in the active calendar of World Wetlands Day, placing the island among the most committed regions in Italy and the Mediterranean for the valorization and protection of these precious ecosystems.
Wetlands in the world: so underestimated. It's time for redemption!
Over the last century, there has been a significant loss of wetlands globally, with over 64% of these ecosystems degraded or destroyed in Europe. This situation has raised increasing concern about the need to restore and protect these vital areas. World Wetlands Day, also celebrated in Sardinia, represents a crucial moment to raise awareness of their importance. Wetlands play an increasingly relevant ecological role, especially in the face of climate change. These habitats are essential for mitigating the effects of climate emergencies: they have the ability to store CO2 faster than other ecosystems and to rapidly absorb floodwaters. In addition to environmental benefits, wetlands offer economic advantages, such as in the fishing sector, and social benefits, contributing to the conservation of unique cultural traditions. Despite their past degradation, now is the time to focus on their redemption and conservation.
