The Mediterranean region heats up faster than the global average, 1.4°C since the pre-industrial period. This change, together with the change in rainfall and rising sea levels, has serious consequences for the entire area. In the last 35 years the frequency of extreme events related to climate change has more than doubled and a further increase in quantity and quality is expected.
Wetlands play an important role in mitigating the effects of climate change. Wetlands are among the most effective carbon sinks in the world. Researchers have found that wetlands can store carbon dioxide from the atmosphere for very long periods of time, from hundreds to thousands of years. Wetland networks also act as ecological corridors allowing species to move from one zone to another and adapt in response to rising temperatures. 
The function of rebalancing these fragile ecosystems is at the heart of the conference coordinated by MEDSEA with the collaboration of the municipal administration of Terralba: on February 2, 2019 in Terralba, at the Museum of the Sea of Marceddì, from 15 to 17.30, the seminar entitled "The allied wetlands of man in the fight against climate change".
