The 4^th October was initiated for the first time in 1925 by Heinrich Zimmermann.

It took five years for it to develop until 4 October 1931, when Animal Day became a worldwide event. The 4^th October was chosen because it is also the Day of Saint Francesco d’Assisi, patron of ecology and animals.

The aim is to raise awareness for animal welfare standards and their protection on a global level.

World Animal Day offers the opportunity for different kind of events, which can be ideated and organized individually, in private or in public co-operation. There will be held many events globally: from open-days at animal shelters to fund raising, communicative and education work, workshops and animal blessing services. In doing so, every individual can be involved in World Animal Day. 

The Mediterranean Sea is rich of biodiversity and different ecosystems which are worthy to protect.

Although the Mediterranean Sea just covers about 1% of global sea surfaces, at least about “28% of endemic species and 7.5% of the world’s marine fauna and 18% of its marine flora” (RAC/SPA) are found in this Sea. At the same time, the Mediterranean Sea is one of the most threatened Seas worldwide. The MEDSEA Foundation carries about the marine and coastal ecosystems.

World Animal Day reminds also the wildlife trade. The CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) regulates the animal trade and punishes illegal trade, which causes the extinction of these animals and the loss of biodiversity in the areas of origin. The international wildlife trade is billions of dollars' worth and includes hundreds of millions of animals. 

Habitat loss and decline of animal populations are a problem. For this reason, international legislation such as CITES is important for maintaining animal welfare standards and protecting the exploitation of animal restricting the illegal trade of them.
