Wetland4Change

Testing and validating wetland based solutions for climate change adaptation and impacts mitigation

Sustainable Development Goals:

Wetland4Change aims for validating transferable solutions centered around wetland conservation and restoration for climate adaptation and mitigation. By accelerating the capacities of wetland managers and policy makers at the local, regional and international levels, this initiative aims to address the urgent challenges posed by wetlands.

Key Project Outputs: Tested and Validated Solutions: Two wetland-based solutions, focusing on carbon sequestration and flood regulation, these solutions will be implemented in the 5 pilot sites of the project:

  • Albufera of Valencia (Spain)
  • Camargue (France)
  • Oristano lagoons (Sardinia, Italy)
  • Kerkini Lake & Strymon catchment (Greece)
  • Struma catchment area (Bulgaria)

Dynamic Transfer Plan: For the first time, a dynamic, user-oriented transfer plan, fueled by science-based knowledge, is being developed. This plan is directly linked to the long-term potential for cross-border cooperation, ensuring effective knowledge exchange at the territorial level and a widespread impact.

MEDSEA brings in its expertise in conservation and restoration of marine and coastal habitats, valuation of ecosystem services, governance and stakeholder involvement to coordinate the activities of the pilot site in the Oristano lagunes and ponds and ensures the effective implementation of the two wetland-based solutions.

Furthermore, based on previous projects and initiatives, MEDSEA will coordinate the communication activities.
