Biodiversity conservation and integrated management of six Ramsar sites in the Gulf of Oristano
Wetlands are vital for human survivor, they represent precious biodiversity reservoirs and give a significantly contribute to reduce the impact of climate change. In order to protect the wetlands and their resources, almost 90% of UN member agreed to the Ramsar Convention, an environmental treaty, in force since 1975, that provides the framework for the conservation and wise use of wetlands of International Importance.
MARISTANIS is an international cooperation project that aims at defining an integrated management model for the 6 Ramsar sites of the Gulf of Oristano: Stagno di Sale ‘e Porcus, Stagno di Mistras, Stagno di Cabras, Stagno di Pauli Maiori, Stagno di S’Ena Arrubia, Stagni di Corru S’Ittiri, Marceddì, San Giovanni.
The project, cofounded by the MAVA Foundation, is coordinated by the MEDSEA Foundation in collaboration with 11 municipalities: Arborea, Arbus, Cabras, Guspini, Nurachi, Oristano, Palmas Arborea, Riola Sardo, San Vero Milis, Santa Giusta, Terralba.
The project pursues the following objectives:
- Improving knowledge of wetlands;
- Achieving integrated coastal wetlands management;
- Reducing threats on marine ecosystems;
- Promoting efficient water resource management and use;
- Reducing the risk from pollution sources;
- Improving the conservation of endangered species and habitats;
- Enhancing cultural and landscape heritage;
- Raising awareness on the importance of wetlands.
