RICREA

Sustainable management of river, lake, and wetland systems through Ecological Transition Contracts

Sustainable Development Goals:

The RICREA project - Network for Collaboration and Development for the Capitalization of RETRALAGS capitalizes on the results obtained from the RETRALAGS project, strengthening the adaptive capacity and resilience of river, lake, and wetland systems. The main objective is the capitalization of a sustainable management model that has already been tested, which will be further developed and adapted to address the new challenges posed by the ecological transition and climate change with an ecosystem-based approach. Through the involvement of local communities, the project aims to raise awareness and empower stakeholders in the management of natural and landscape resources, promoting the activation of the "Ecological Transition Contract", an innovative planning tool aligned with the 2021-2027 programming framework.

RICREA includes an extensive communication plan to raise awareness among local communities and engage stakeholders in the sustainable management of resources. Public events, seminars, and workshops will be organized to share project experiences and encourage the replication of Ecological Transition Contracts in other areas.

Key project results:

  • Development of new Ecological Transition Contracts and updating of existing contracts in the involved territories.
  • Implementation of pilot actions in natural systems to test sustainable management solutions and adaptation to climate change.
  • Strengthening local capacities through participatory governance processes, fostering cross-border cooperation.
  • Creation of long-term strategies for the protection and enhancement of natural and cultural assets of rivers, lakes, lagoons, and wetlands.

Main project activities:

  • Ecological Transition Contracts:
New Ecological Transition Contracts will be developed and implemented for natural sites not yet equipped with this tool, strengthening local capacities for sustainable planning and management.
  • Pilot actions:
Pilot actions will be carried out in the involved territories, with interventions aimed at improving the resilience of natural areas to climate impacts. These actions will be designed to be replicable throughout the cross-border area.

  • Participatory governance:
The project promotes a governance model based on the proactivity of local communities, encouraging the active participation of public and private stakeholders in the management of environmental resources.
  • Cross-border action plans and strategies:
Action plans will be developed for the involved natural sites, in line with the challenges of the ecological transition, integrating the ecosystem-based approaches already activated by the RETRALAGS project.

The MEDSEA Foundation will be responsible for testing two selected intangible solutions from the Action Plan of the Coastal Contract for the Wetlands of the Oristanese area.
